Therapy for late-diagnosed ADHD women in Portland, OR
Are you just finding out you have ADHD? Or haven’t received your official diagnosis but it’s clear ADHD has been present in your life all these years? Counseling for late-diagnosed ADHD women can help!
If you’re a woman with late-diagnosed ADHD, you’ve probably felt it…
No matter how hard you try, you’re barely just treading water. No matter what you do time goes faster than you think and you’re late to that appointment, or miss that bill deadline. Sometimes the consequences are embarrassing but manageable (your friends roll their eyes as you are late to coffee yet again) and sometimes they are more dire (huge late fees or loss of opportunities that you are ashamed to even admit). Then one day, the pieces of the puzzle all come together. You learn about ADHD and everything you’ve experienced finally makes sense. In our work we’ll sort through all the pieces to make sense of your experience with your new knowledge of ADHD. Finally understanding that this wasn’t just some flaw in you, but real challenges caused by real differences in the way your brain functions. The relief and validation of knowing there wasn’t something “wrong” with you all this time can be powerful. And, there’s still work to do. Together we can help you learn about ADHD, and by extension how your unique brain works and the tools and supports you need to claim the life that’s always felt just out of reach.
How counseling with me can support your ADHD journey:
Understanding different types and presentations of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive, combined, “high-functioning”/overachieving and burnt out)
Understanding the unique way anxiety and depression intersect with ADHD, often develop due to ADHD and are often manifestations of functional compensations and shame
Learning the neuroscience of ADHD and what’s ACTUALLY happening in your brain (hint: you’re not just lazy)
Learning actually effective coping skills and strategies that address the unique challenges of ADHD (hint: it’s not just “try harder”)
Exploring what kinds of supports make sense for your ADHD: Medication, life rhythms, academic and occupational accommodations, apps, social supports
Healing self-esteem and trauma related to ADHD
